  • Human Bodies and the Forces of Nature Technoscience Perspectives on Hydropower Dams, Safety, Human Security, Emotions and Embodied Knowledges
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Technoscience and Development. - Karlshamn : Makerere University and the Research Division of Technoscience Studies at Blekinge Institute of Technology. - 2001-2837. ; 1:1, s. 1-14
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Hydropower has commonly been promoted as an environmentally friendly and renewable energy resource. Despite this, the major negative social and ecological impacts on the environment and its local inhabitants have been well established for a long time, as well as the high risks for large-scale disasters caused by hydropower dam failures. Drawing on a qualitative study that focuses on the Lule River in Sweden, this article analyses the cultural politics of emotions with regard to dams, reservoirs, safety and human security.Annually between one and two major dam failures occur around the world, with major consequences for human and non-human lives, the environment and the economy, and the issue has been addressed in policy making and within the work of power companies since the 1970’s. However, more people die due to accidents on dams and reservoirs than due to dam failures. In Sweden, the number of hydropower regulation related deaths within the demographically small municipality of Jokkmokk, where a major part of Sweden’s hydropower is being produced, is on average 0,02 per cent per year, or 1-2 persons, which would correspond to 180-360 deaths in the Swedish capital Stockholm. Yet, there are no calls for inquiries, investigations and measurements to ensure public safety around dams in Sweden. Linking these two aspects on hydropower dams and safety through the concept of human security we identify a void of understanding and valuing the importance of humans’ – operators - lived experiences and invested emotions in the work to avoid dam failures, accidents on the reservoirs and loss of lives. We address the fact that the operators live and are related to the inhabitants of the regulated Lule River and what role this may play in enhanced human security.          We argue that technical reports and studies on dam safety are written in a way that invokes false emotions of control, safety and security for inhabitants as well as political decision makers. New technologies for camera surveillance and monitoring provide opportunities to assemble data on a dam and the water flowing through it (seepage), with the purpose to enhance safety. However, we suggest that these systems actually may produce false emotions of safety and security, reinforcing a paradigm of perceived control of nature’s forces and thereby may contribute to decreased safety and human security.

  • Identifying child functioning from an ICF-CY perspective : everyday life situations explored in measures of participation
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Disability and Rehabilitation. - 0963-8288. ; 33:13-14, s. 1230-1244
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose. This study was part of a larger work to develop an authentic measure consisting of code sets for self- or proxy-report of child participation. The aim was to identify common everyday life situations of children and youth based on measures of participation.Method. The study was descriptive in nature and involved several stages: systematic search of literature to find articles presenting measures for children and youth with disabilities, identifying measures in selected articles, linking items in included measures to the ICF-CY, analysing content in measures presented as performance and participation and identifying aggregations of ICF-CY codes across these measures.Results. A large number of measures for children and youth with disabilities were identified but only 12 fulfilled the inclusion criteria. A slight distinction in content and age appropriateness appeared. Measures presented as performance covered all the ICF-CY Activities and Participation chapters, whereas measures presented as participation covered five of nine chapters. Three common everyday life situations emerged from the measures: Moving around, Engagement in play and Recreation and leisure.Conclusion. Only a small number of life situations for children and youth emerged from items in selected measures, thus, other sources are needed to identify more everyday life situations.

  • Generational positions at family dinner : Food morality and social order
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Language in society (London. Print). - Cambridge University Press. - 0047-4045. ; 40:4, s. 405-426
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article concerns generation and food morality, drawing on video recordings of dinners in Swedish middle-class families. A detailed analysis of affect displays during one family dinner extends prior work on food morality (Ochs, Pontecorvo, & Fasulo 1996; Grieshaber 1997; Bourdieu 2003; Wiggins 2004), documenting ways in which participants may shift between distinct GENERATIONAL POSITIONS with respect to affects and food morality (from “irresponsiblechild” to caretaker positions). In our recordings, an elder sibling is shifting between a series of contrasting affective stances (Ochs & Schieffelin 1989; M. Goodwin 2006; Stivers 2008), linked to generational positions along an implicit age continuum: positioning himself, at one end of the continuum, as his young brother’s accomplice, and at the other as an adult, aserious guardian of food morality. This study shows that generational positionsare not fixed, but are positions adopted as parts of language socializationand interactional events.

  • The practice of implementing sustainable ICT practices : The case of the Green IT Audit
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 23rd NORDIC ACADEMY OF MANAGEMENT conference. - Copenhagen.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • For several decades, Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) have been used by individuals and within organizations in order to increase efficiency. Traditionally, the increased efficiency enabled by ICTs has primarily affected factors such as profitability and time. In recent years, however, ICT has been promoted as an important tool for increasing ecological efficiency, i.e. for sustainability. Although there are several environmental implications related to the ICT sector to take into account, such as the production of electronic waste (e-waste), the extraction of rare earth elements (REEs) and the hazardous production of ICT equipment, the discourse has increasingly shifted towards discussing the positive sides of ICT for sustainability (Author et al., 2014). According to recent reports, the potential of using ICT in order to increase the ecological sustainability of our society is huge. According to GeSI, the Global e-Sustainability Initiative, we will be able to decrease the annual GHG emissions by 9,1 GtCO2e worldwide, as well as creating 29,5 million jobs by using smart solutions enabled by ICT (GeSI, 2008). Some examples of these solutions are digitalization and dematerialization, system integration and process optimization (ibid.) However, as the full potential of smart ICT solutions hinges on that it is implemented and used correctly, we have yet to see the benefits of ICT for ecological sustainability surpass its negative effects (Rattle, 2010).By following one initiative for implementing smart ICT solutions in organizations in Sweden, namely the Green IT Audit, we have investigated how the implementation of these sustainable ICT practices takes place in practice (Author, 2013). The Green IT Audit is a consultancy model, developed by TCO Development, which is used to improve the usage of and implement sustainable ICT solutions in organizations. By drawing on practice theory (Schatzki, 1996), this paper explores new ways of explaining how the implementation of sustainable ICT practices could occur. A practice is described by Reckwitz as a “routinised type of behaviour which consists of several elements, interconnected to one another: ... bodily activities, ... mental activities, ‘things’ and their use, a background knowledge in the form of understanding, know-how, states of emotion and motivational knowledge” (2002; p. 249). The routinized way of performing a Green IT Audit in organizations is also constituted by these elements and can thus be declared a practice. Ijab & Molla (2011) suggests that a practice approach provides a “useful lens to garner deeper and holistic understanding of the information systems that organisations develop, deploy, use and integrate for eco-sustainability” (p. 2). What the consultant do and his or her understanding of sustainable ICT will thus affect the way Green IT is explained to the client. In turn, the understanding of the client and their material infrastructure will also affect how the model is implemented in the organization.
