  • "People Out of Place" : Advocates Negotiations on Children's Participation in the Asylum Application Process in Sweden
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Law, Policy and the Family. - Oxford University Press. - 1360-9939. ; 27:2, s. 266-287
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article concerns legal representatives’ negotiations around the principle of children’s best interests and children’s right to participation according to the Convention on the Rights of the Child, in cases of families applying for asylum in Sweden. Using material from nine interviews with children’s advocates, we analyse their strategies for obtaining narratives from children without putting them in a vulnerable position and examine the tension between migration control and children’s interests. The study shows that children are often assumed to be adequately represented by their parents and that they are perceived as ‘people out of place’ in the asylum process. The right to a customised asylum process, in which children’s needs and perspectives are taken into consideration, tends to be overlooked. Also, the principle of children’s best interests is overshadowed by an ambition to prepare the parents’ claims for asylum in a credible and strategic manner or it may be used as a last resort when all other efforts to get an application granted have been exhausted. In addition, although representatives occasionally develop successful ways of bringing child-specific persecution to the attention of the migration authorities, bureaucratic, and economic barriers constitute a limitation. This ultimately results in the child’s right to seek asylum being overshadowed by the state’s highly technical migration control.

  • Prohibiting Sex Purchasing and Ending Trafficking The Swedish Prostitution Law
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Michigan Journal of International Law. - 1052-2867. ; 33:1, s. 133-157
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Swedish prostitution law from 1999, now followed by Norway and Iceland, criminalized the purchaser and decriminalized the prostituted person. This is analyzed as a cogent state response under international trafficking law, particularly to the obligations set forth in the United Nation’s Trafficking Protocol from 2000. The Protocol states that a person is regarded a trafficking victim when, e.g., someone abuses her “position of vulnerability” in order to exploit her. International jurisprudence and social evidence strongly suggest that prostitution, as practiced in the world, usually satisfies this definition. Further, the Protocol urges states to reduce the demand for prostitution and to protect and assist victims, for instance by adopting laws deterring purchasers of sex, and by supporting those exploited in prostitution. Policy makers, such as the U.S. Department of State, are criticized for taking an inadequate position in face of the growing evidence from the Swedish law's impact. The article shows that Sweden has significantly reduced the occurrence of trafficking in Sweden compared to neighboring countries. It also scrutinizes some misinformation of the law's impact, showing for instance that claims alleging a more dangerous situation for those still in prostitution after 1999 were unfounded. In addition, the article addresses remaining obstacles to the law's effective implementation, arguing that in order to realize the law's full potential to support escape from trafficking, the civil rights of prostituted persons under current law should be strengthened to enable them to claim damages directly from the purchasers for the harm to which they have contributed, and for the violation of the prostituted persons' equality and dignity - a position now recognized by the government to some extent by clarifying amendments made in 2011.

  • Generational positions at family dinner : Food morality and social order
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Language in society (London. Print). - Cambridge University Press. - 0047-4045. ; 40:4, s. 405-426
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article concerns generation and food morality, drawing on video recordings of dinners in Swedish middle-class families. A detailed analysis of affect displays during one family dinner extends prior work on food morality (Ochs, Pontecorvo, & Fasulo 1996; Grieshaber 1997; Bourdieu 2003; Wiggins 2004), documenting ways in which participants may shift between distinct GENERATIONAL POSITIONS with respect to affects and food morality (from “irresponsiblechild” to caretaker positions). In our recordings, an elder sibling is shifting between a series of contrasting affective stances (Ochs & Schieffelin 1989; M. Goodwin 2006; Stivers 2008), linked to generational positions along an implicit age continuum: positioning himself, at one end of the continuum, as his young brother’s accomplice, and at the other as an adult, aserious guardian of food morality. This study shows that generational positionsare not fixed, but are positions adopted as parts of language socializationand interactional events.
  • Contemporary struggles in Latin America
  • 2013
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt)abstract
    • The 9th issue of the Stockholm Review of Latin American Studies brings together the work of five prominent young researchers who examine and discuss different kinds of contemporary struggles in Argentina, Brazil, Cuba and Uruguay. This issue’s articles are based on the findings of recently published doctoral dissertations in anthropology and media studies:Silje Lundgren’s anthropological analysis of the practice of piropos – catcalling, compliments and comments addressed by men to women in Havana street interactions – sheds light on everyday gender struggles, male homosocial communication and the performance of masculinity.Raúl Marquéz Porras investigates strategies for the solution of everyday conflicts around property rights in an informally occupied neighborhood on the outskirts of the city of Salvador, northeastern Brazil.Virginia Melián examines the journalistic practices for reporting on the protests against the construction of pulp-mills and the monoculture of trees, taking place between 2005-2009, on both sides of the borders between Argentina and Uruguay.Maria Padrón Hernández discusses the concept of poverty and the political implications of a poverty discourse as she describes and analyzes the everyday struggles of her Cuban informants in order to make ends meet.Last but not least, Susann Ullberg examines flooding in the region of Santa Fe, Argentina. Ullberg analyzes how practices of memory and oblivion of past flood experiences clash and collide within the Santafesian public administration. The present issue was partially funded by a grant from Granholms stiftelse to finance the project “Independence and Dependence in Latin America, 200 years later.” In this sense, it completes and dialogues with the 2012’s issue of the journal which also forms part of this project (SRLAS No. 8, 2012, ¿Lenguas independientes? Independent languages?) by offering a contemporary perspective on new forms of dependencies and new struggles for independencies in Latin America. Enjoy your reading!

  • Art, artistic research and the animal question
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Art Monitor: A Journal of Artistic Research. - 1653-9958. ; :3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt)abstract
    • Recent developments in cultural studies and other areas of the humanities and social sciences point to an ‘animal turn’, an increasing interest in posthumanist, non-anthropocentric approaches toward exploring the multiple roles and meanings of animals in human lifeworlds. This paper focuses on areas of contemporary art that place ‘the question of the animal’ centrally and engage in the practice of human-animal boundary work, identity production, and meaning. By addressing a number of animal art projects employing a diversity of visual and material approaches and techniques, from Joseph Beuys’s Coyote (1974) to Eduardo Kac’s GFP Bunny (2000), the paper discusses what it means to reclaim the presence, visibility, and agency of animals in art and artistic research. By the concept of zooësis, artistic space is carved out for human-animal relationalities to be critically interrogated and re-conceptualized, and the ontological security of 'the human' to become disturbed.

  • ‘Power’ is that which remains to be explained : dispelling the ominous dark matter of critical planning studies
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Planning Theory. - 1473-0952. ; 16:2, s. 203-222
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this article is to contribute to the development of new theoretical and methodological resources for analysing power dynamics in planning studies. Our overarching aim is to demystify the concept of ‘power’ and what it purports to be describing, making those practices grouped under this label more tangible and, hence, also more readily contestable. Investigating how the effects we label as power are produced, instead of using ‘power’ as an all- covering explanation of societal events, demands a conceptualization of power as the outcome of social processes rather than as a causal variable behind them. An empirical study of a referendum regarding a major urban development in a Swedish suburban municipality illustrates how strong assumptions regarding the dominance of, for example, pre-existing powerful actor-constellations or purely economic relations are not always very helpful, highlighting the need for more acute attentiveness to the micro-physics of power.
