  • Rethinking heritage from peace : reflections from the Palestinian-Israeli context
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Heritage and peacebuilding. - Woodbridge : Boydell & Brewer. - 9781783272167 ; s. 137-148
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt)abstract
    • Case-studies of whether and how heritage can be used to bring about reconciliation. This volume explores one of the most critical issues of our time: whether heritage can contribute to a more peaceful society and future. It reflects a core belief that heritage can provide solutions to reconciling peoples and demonstrates the amount of significant work being carried out internationally. Based round the core themes of new and emerging ideas around heritage and peace, heritage and peace-building in practice, and heritage, peace-building and sites, the twenty contributions seek to raise perceptions and understanding of heritage-based peace-building practices. Responding to the emphasis placed on conflict, war and memorialization, they reflect exploratory yet significant steps towards reclaiming the history, theory, and practice of peacebuilding as serious issues for heritage in contemporary society. The geographical scope of the book includes contributions from Europe, notably the Balkans and Northern Ireland, the Middle East, and Kenya. Diana Walters is an International Heritage Consultant and Honorary Senior Research Fellow at the University of Exeter; Daniel Laven is Associate Professor of Human Geography, Department of Tourism Studies and Geography/European Tourism Research Institute (ETOUR), Mid Sweden University; Peter Davis is Emeritus Professor of Museology, Newcastle University. • Understanding hallmark event failure : A case study of a Swedish music festival
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Event and Festival Management. - 1785-2954. ; 8:2, s. 172-185
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PurposeHallmark events can be very beneficial for host communities, not least due to their potential in attracting tourists. The Peace & Love music festival was the hallmark event of the Swedish city Borlänge. In 2013, the event organization declared bankruptcy and canceled the forthcoming festival. The purpose of this paper is to identify and discuss the factors that caused the failure of the 2013 Peace & Love festival.Design/methodology/approachThe case of the Peace & Love festival is analyzed using three data sources: interviews with the former members of the event organization; secondary data describing the Swedish festival industry; and festival visitors’ perspectives represented by comments on social media. An organizational ecology perspective frames the analysis.FindingsThe results of the study reveal that the failure of the event can be understood by a combination of three components: an organization in a vulnerable position, a strong new competitor entering the Swedish festival market, and uncertain visitors searching for the new place to be.Originality/valueVery few studies have researched event failure, although the subject is a recommended priority within the field of festival studies. This study presents a thorough examination of a hallmark event failure, which contributes to this area of knowledge and provides relevant information for organizations and host cities.

  • Toward Landscape-Scale Stewardship and Development : A Theoretical Framework of United States National Heritage Areas
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Society & Natural Resources. - Taylor & Francis. - 0894-1920. ; 26:7, s. 762-777
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There is increasing recognition that many of today's environmental challenges will be addressed most effectively if management is conducted at landscape or regional scales. This article describes the development of a theoretical framework of one approach to such management, namely, U.S. National Heritage Areas (NHAs). This well-established federal approach enables communities to retain local management but receive national attention and stature through congressional designation. NHAs create networks of private and public partners, including the National Park Service, that engage new constituencies in the stewardship of nationally significant landscapes. The framework synthesizes common characteristics of heritage areas identified from in-depth case studies of three NHAs and further analysis by researchers and prominent NHA managers. Findings from this project emphasize the importance of three factors for future NHA and related landscape-scale efforts: (1) use of “heritage” as a public engagement strategy, (2) collaborative approaches to management, and (3) development of intersectoral networks.

  • Emergent Writing Methodologies in Feminist Studies
  • 2011
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt)abstract
    • Contemporary challenges for seeking new knowledge in feminist studies are intimately intertwined with methodological renewal that promotes justice and equality in changing global contexts. Written by some of the leading scholars in their fields, this edited collection focuses on the emergence of writing methodologies in feminist studies and their implications for the study of power and change. The book explores some of the central politics, ideas, and dimensions of power that shape and condition knowledge, at the same time as it elaborates critical, embodied, reflective and situated writing practices. By bringing together a variety of multi/transdisciplinary contributions in a single collection, the anthology offers a timely and intellectually stimulating contribution that deals with how new forms of writing research can contribute to promote fruitful analysis of inequality and power relations related to gender, racialisation, ethnicity, class and heteronormativity and their intersections. It also includes the complex relationship between author, text and audiences. The intended audience is postgraduates, researchers and academics within feminist and intersectionality studies across disciplines in the humanities and social sciences. The book is excellent as literature in feminist studies courses and helpful guidance for teaching writing sessions and workshops.

  • Location and Unlocation Examining Gender and Telephony through AutoEthnographic Textual and Visual Methods
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Qualitative Methods. - 1609-4069. ; 12, s. 403-419
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Studies on gender and telephony tend to be quantitative and depict the purposes for which women and men use mobile telephones and landlines. Qualitative studies on the topic predominantly rely on face-to-face interviews to examine how telephone use genders space. We suggest these traditional methods of data collection leave unexamined the emotional and social relationships that emerge and are enabled by telephone use which at times reconfigure and gender social spaces. In this article we present a collaborative autoethnographic inquiry based on our own telephone lives. We introduce a reflexive visual and textual methodological design, specifically diary notes, memory work, and photography, developed from our lives as researcher and researched. We examine an important theme in our findings, the physical placement of the telephone and the phone holder’s awareness of the physicality of the telephone, which illustrates the importance of our methodological choices. We show how the placement of the phone by the users both genders space and creates emotional spaces.
