  • Understanding hallmark event failure : A case study of a Swedish music festival
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Event and Festival Management. - 1785-2954. ; 8:2, s. 172-185
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PurposeHallmark events can be very beneficial for host communities, not least due to their potential in attracting tourists. The Peace & Love music festival was the hallmark event of the Swedish city Borlänge. In 2013, the event organization declared bankruptcy and canceled the forthcoming festival. The purpose of this paper is to identify and discuss the factors that caused the failure of the 2013 Peace & Love festival.Design/methodology/approachThe case of the Peace & Love festival is analyzed using three data sources: interviews with the former members of the event organization; secondary data describing the Swedish festival industry; and festival visitors’ perspectives represented by comments on social media. An organizational ecology perspective frames the analysis.FindingsThe results of the study reveal that the failure of the event can be understood by a combination of three components: an organization in a vulnerable position, a strong new competitor entering the Swedish festival market, and uncertain visitors searching for the new place to be.Originality/valueVery few studies have researched event failure, although the subject is a recommended priority within the field of festival studies. This study presents a thorough examination of a hallmark event failure, which contributes to this area of knowledge and provides relevant information for organizations and host cities.

  • Att leva och sälja sin dröm - livsstilsföretagaren mellan familjeliv, marknad och politisk retorik
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Sociologisk Forskning. - Sociologisk Forskning. - 2002-066X. ; 51:2, s. 137-156
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The article focuses on lifestyle entrepreneurship, characterised by a balancing work between personal lifestyle motives and economic motives. It builds on a qualitative study of business owners who have realized a life dream of starting a countryside business in the tourism and hospitality industry in Sweden. Through the notion of "balancing work", the analysis focuses on the tension between a personal life sphere and a market. In particular, the analysis highlights how the notion of "the life dream" emerges as a narrative practice of self-realization, simultaneously as it is offered as an experience product. The analysis demonstrates how the entrepreneurs balance between personal stories of togetherness and marketing practices, between images of right and wrong commodification, and between constraining working conditions and a popular image of the successful entrepreneur, reinforced by a political discourse on rural entrepreneurship. It is concluded that balancing work between personal identities and economic practices is a practice of valuation, offering new insights into working conditions and markets situated in the intersection between markets and personal life spheres.

  • Transdisciplinarity in practice: : aims, collaboration and integration in a Swedish research programme
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of Integrative Environmental Sciences. - Taylor & Francis Group. - 1943-815X. ; 11:3-4, s. 155-171
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article discusses the practice of crossdisciplinarity in the context of future-oriented sustainability studies. Much research into crossdisciplinarity has concentrated on programmatic and epistemological questions. In this study, we focus on research practice and efforts to realize transdisciplinary aims across a research programme. We use the Swedish Future Forests programme as a case study and explore its aims, forms of collaboration and level of conceptual integration. The study demonstrates that efficient integration requires organizational settings able to support the development of a common conceptual framework. To achieve this, the aims and forms of collaboration and the means of integration ought to be consistent. Far-reaching integration and short-term instrumental objectives may be difficult to combine because integration requires intellectual space, specific boundary settings and time. Short-term instrumental objectives may also hamper open and reflexive discussion of alternative pathways to sustainability and of how participating actors shape the research process. These insights may help researchers and participating actors to design research programmes that enable a realization of their transdisciplinary ambitions.

  • Influences of infrastructure and attitudes to health on value of travel time savings in bicycle journeys
  • 2013
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt)abstract
    • In this paper we investigate how attitudes to health and exercise in connection with cycling influence the estimation of values of travel time savings in different kinds of bicycle environments (mixed traffic, bicycle lane in the road way, bicycle path next to the road, and bicycle path not in connection with the road). The results, based on two Swedish stated choice studies, suggest that the values of travel time savings are lower when cycling in better conditions. Surprisingly, the respondents do not consider cycling on a path next to the road worse than cycling on a path not in connection to the road, indicating that they do not take traffic noise and air pollution into account in their decision to cycle. No difference can be found between cycling on a road way (mixed traffic) and cycling in a bicycle lane in the road way. The results also indicate that respondents that include health aspects in their choice to cycle have lower value of travel time savings for cycling than respondents that state that health aspects are of less importance, at least when cycling on a bicycle path. The appraisals of travel time savings regarding cycling also differ a lot depending on the respondents’ alternative travel mode. The individuals who stated that they will take the car if they do not cycle have a much higher valuation of travel time savings than the persons stating public transport as the main alternative to cycling.

  • Does the competition state undermine the long term sustainability of rural tourism? : The case of Sweden
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Proceedings from TTRA 2014 International Conference: Tourism and the New Global Economy. ; s. 171-188
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the contemporary competition state, many peripheral regions are in decline. Tourism is increasingly considered as a savior for regions lagging behind. The EU has launched several programs with the ambition to stimulate growth and employment in peripheral areas which are used in tourism development projects. In this paper a longitudinal analysis of changes in Swedish tourism guest nights with an attempt to assess the spatial changes that have taken place in the light of this new regional tourism policy are carried out. The aim is to investigate if tourism and tourism policy contributes to level out disparities between regions. The analysis is based on statistics on Swedish guest nights, on employees in the accommodation sector and on EU funds. Although there are exceptions, the main findings indicate that the potential for creating sustainable rural tourism growth through tourism policy seems to be much less than the popular discourse suggests.

  • Samhällets roll i besöksnäringens utveckling
  • 2011

  • Multidisciplinary recording and continuity of care for stroke patients with eating difficulties
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of Interprofessional Care. - New York, USA : Informa Healthcare. - 1356-1820. ; 24:3, s. 298-310
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Eating difficulties after stroke are common and can, in addition to being a risk for serious medical complications, impair functional capability, social life and self-image. Stroke unit care entails systematic multidisciplinary teamwork and continuity of care. The purpose of this study was to describe (i) multidisciplinary stroke care as represented in patient records for patients with eating difficulties, and (ii) the written information that was transferred from hospital to elderly care. Data from 59 patient records were analysed with descriptive statistics and by categorization of phrases. Signs of multidisciplinary collaboration to manage eating problems were scarce in the records. While two notes from physiotherapists were found, nurses contributed with 78% of all notes (n = 358). Screening of swallowing and body weight was documented for most patients, whereas data on nutritional status and eating were largely lacking. The majority of notes represented patients' handling of food in the mouth, swallowing and lack of energy. Care plans were unstructured and few contained steps for managing eating. Discharge summaries held poor information on care related to eating difficulties. The language of all professionals was mostly unspecific. However, notes from speech-language therapists were comprehensive and entailed information on follow-up and patient participation

  • Nurses' lived experiences of moral stress support in the intensive care context.
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Journal of Nursing Management. - 0966-0429. ; 14:5, s. 405-13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study was to analyse and describe lived experiences of support in situations characterized by critical care situations and moral stress in intensive care nursing. An exploratory interpretative study was conducted. Data consisted of interviews with 36 nurses from different types of intensive care units. The first level of analysis of data identified contextual factors, such as type and purpose of support and working conditions. On the next level of analysis five tentative interpretations were identified: (1) receiving organized support is a matter of self-determination, (2) whether to participate in organized support or to be off duty are experienced as mutually exclusive, (3) dealing with moral stress is experienced as a private matter, (4) colleagues managing moral stress serve as models in stress support and (5) not being able to deal with moral stress urges one to seek outside support. A comparison of these interpretations identified three major themes: availability, accessibility and receptivity of support. The main interpretation and conclusion were: lived experience of moral stress support involves an interconnectedness between structural and existential factors. Thus, adequate moral stress support presupposes an allowable professional climate and access to caring supervision.

  • Methodological Issues in Interviews Involving people with Communication Impairments After acquired Brain Damage
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Qualitative Health Research. - Newbury Park, Calif. : Sage Publications. - 1049-7323. ; 17:10, s. 1361-1371
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Qualitative research has made a significant contribution to the body of knowledge related to how people experience living with various chronic diseases and disabilities, however, the voices of certain vulnerable populations, particularly those with impairments that affect their ability to communicate, are commonly absent. In recent years, a few researchers have attempted to explore the most effective ways to ensure that the voices of people with communication impairments from acquired brain damages can be captured in qualitative research interviews, yet several methodological issues related to including this population in qualitative research remained unexamined. In this article, the authors draw on insights derived from their research on the experiences of adult survivors of stroke and traumatic brain injury to describe methodological issues related to sampling, informed consent, and fatigue in participant and researcher while also making some recommendations for conducting qualitative interviews with these populations.
