  • State Aid and Taxation of Transnational Companies A Study of State-Corporate Crime
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Critical Criminology. - 1205-8629.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study examines the taxation of transnational companies from the perspective of state-corporate crime. As in Sutherland’s pioneering study on white-collar crime, the author relies, in this case, on administrative decisions issued by the European Commissioner for Competition regarding Fiat and Starbucks. According to the Commissioner, the tax advisors of these organizations prepared and submitted special tax rulings on behalf of their clients that were granted by the Luxembourg and Dutch tax authorities, respectively. However, these tax rulings were considered illegal under European law, as they constitute state aid. Therefore, the Commissioner fined Fiat and Starbucks. In this inquiry, state aid from tax rulings is conceived as a process of capital accumulation that arises from states’ regimes of permission based on the interactions between public sector and private sector actors. Thus, an observable symbiosis between tax authorities and transnational companies allowed the latter to use tax regulations in a manipulative way, while the former exercised weak/undue control. This study also unveiled the criminogenic role of tax advisors, an industry that is rarely held accountable for their actions.

  • Masculinity and the sociality of cooking in men’s everyday lives
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Sociological Review. - 0038-0261. ; 65:4, s. 816-831
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article explores how 31 Swedish men (22–88 years old) talk about the sociality of domestic cooking in everyday life. We demonstrate how domestic cooking – for oneself, for others and with others – is part of the understanding of contemporary Swedish men and how the expressed sociality of cooking is intertwined with accomplishments of masculinity. The sociality of cooking is not only about homosocial leisure but also a way for men to maintain heterosocial relationships and assume domestic responsibility. We discuss a potential cultural transition in men's domestic meal sociality and suggest the need for studies of gendered divisions of domestic work and the sociology of food to analyse how cooking shares similar properties to those of commensality, and the implications of this regarding gender relations.

  • Prohibiting Sex Purchasing and Ending Trafficking The Swedish Prostitution Law
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Michigan Journal of International Law. - 1052-2867. ; 33:1, s. 133-157
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Swedish prostitution law from 1999, now followed by Norway and Iceland, criminalized the purchaser and decriminalized the prostituted person. This is analyzed as a cogent state response under international trafficking law, particularly to the obligations set forth in the United Nation’s Trafficking Protocol from 2000. The Protocol states that a person is regarded a trafficking victim when, e.g., someone abuses her “position of vulnerability” in order to exploit her. International jurisprudence and social evidence strongly suggest that prostitution, as practiced in the world, usually satisfies this definition. Further, the Protocol urges states to reduce the demand for prostitution and to protect and assist victims, for instance by adopting laws deterring purchasers of sex, and by supporting those exploited in prostitution. Policy makers, such as the U.S. Department of State, are criticized for taking an inadequate position in face of the growing evidence from the Swedish law's impact. The article shows that Sweden has significantly reduced the occurrence of trafficking in Sweden compared to neighboring countries. It also scrutinizes some misinformation of the law's impact, showing for instance that claims alleging a more dangerous situation for those still in prostitution after 1999 were unfounded. In addition, the article addresses remaining obstacles to the law's effective implementation, arguing that in order to realize the law's full potential to support escape from trafficking, the civil rights of prostituted persons under current law should be strengthened to enable them to claim damages directly from the purchasers for the harm to which they have contributed, and for the violation of the prostituted persons' equality and dignity - a position now recognized by the government to some extent by clarifying amendments made in 2011.

  • Generational positions at family dinner : Food morality and social order
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Language in society (London. Print). - Cambridge University Press. - 0047-4045. ; 40:4, s. 405-426
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article concerns generation and food morality, drawing on video recordings of dinners in Swedish middle-class families. A detailed analysis of affect displays during one family dinner extends prior work on food morality (Ochs, Pontecorvo, & Fasulo 1996; Grieshaber 1997; Bourdieu 2003; Wiggins 2004), documenting ways in which participants may shift between distinct GENERATIONAL POSITIONS with respect to affects and food morality (from “irresponsiblechild” to caretaker positions). In our recordings, an elder sibling is shifting between a series of contrasting affective stances (Ochs & Schieffelin 1989; M. Goodwin 2006; Stivers 2008), linked to generational positions along an implicit age continuum: positioning himself, at one end of the continuum, as his young brother’s accomplice, and at the other as an adult, aserious guardian of food morality. This study shows that generational positionsare not fixed, but are positions adopted as parts of language socializationand interactional events.

  • Contemporary struggles in Latin America
  • 2013
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt)abstract
    • The 9th issue of the Stockholm Review of Latin American Studies brings together the work of five prominent young researchers who examine and discuss different kinds of contemporary struggles in Argentina, Brazil, Cuba and Uruguay. This issue’s articles are based on the findings of recently published doctoral dissertations in anthropology and media studies:Silje Lundgren’s anthropological analysis of the practice of piropos – catcalling, compliments and comments addressed by men to women in Havana street interactions – sheds light on everyday gender struggles, male homosocial communication and the performance of masculinity.Raúl Marquéz Porras investigates strategies for the solution of everyday conflicts around property rights in an informally occupied neighborhood on the outskirts of the city of Salvador, northeastern Brazil.Virginia Melián examines the journalistic practices for reporting on the protests against the construction of pulp-mills and the monoculture of trees, taking place between 2005-2009, on both sides of the borders between Argentina and Uruguay.Maria Padrón Hernández discusses the concept of poverty and the political implications of a poverty discourse as she describes and analyzes the everyday struggles of her Cuban informants in order to make ends meet.Last but not least, Susann Ullberg examines flooding in the region of Santa Fe, Argentina. Ullberg analyzes how practices of memory and oblivion of past flood experiences clash and collide within the Santafesian public administration. The present issue was partially funded by a grant from Granholms stiftelse to finance the project “Independence and Dependence in Latin America, 200 years later.” In this sense, it completes and dialogues with the 2012’s issue of the journal which also forms part of this project (SRLAS No. 8, 2012, ¿Lenguas independientes? Independent languages?) by offering a contemporary perspective on new forms of dependencies and new struggles for independencies in Latin America. Enjoy your reading!
