  • Children's fear as experienced by the parents of children with cancer
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Journal of Pediatric Nursing : Nursing Care of Children and Families. - Amsterdam : Elsevier. - 0882-5963. ; 22:3, s. 233-244
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It is known that children with cancer experience and express fear, but little is found in the literature about how the parents experience their child's fear. This study aimed to highlight the parents' lived experience and understanding of their child's fear. Focus group interviews with 15 parents were performed. Data were analyzed through a phenomenological hermeneutic method. Fear in children with cancer is described by the parents as a multidimensional phenomenon, which is somehow difficult to identify. It appears in contrast to the absence of fear. The comprehensive understanding of the results reveals that the parents experience their children's fear as both a suffering and an ethical demand for the parents to answer.

  • How physicians and nurses handle fear in children with cancer
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Journal of Pediatric Nursing : Nursing Care of Children and Families. - 0882-5963. ; 22:1, s. 71-80
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Previous research on fear in children with cancer has often focused on interventions to alleviate fear related to medical procedures and less on how to meet the challenges related to existential fear. This study aimed to describe how experienced nurses and physicians handle fear in children with cancer. Ten nurses and physicians with more than 10 years of experience in child oncology from a university hospital in Sweden were interviewed, and a qualitative content analysis was performed on the data. Nurses' and physicians' handling of fear encompasses commitment and closeness and yet also a distancing from fear and its expressions

  • Arbets(o)förmåga - begreppsliga och etiska anmärkningar
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Arbets(o)förmåga - ur ett mångdisciplinärt perspektiv. - Stockholm : Santérus förlag. - 978-91-7359-010-5 ; s. 21-46

  • Impact of the organisational culture on primary care staff members' intention to engage in research and development
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Health Organisation & Management. - Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 1477-7266. ; 29:2, s. 234-251
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to understand how organisational culture influences the intentions of primary care staff members (PCSM) to engage in research and development (R&D).Design/methodology/approachThe participants (n = 30) were PCSM employed in a care centre in south-western Sweden. The study had an observational design with an ethnographic approach. The data were collected by means of observations, interviews and analysis of documents.FindingsThe results revealed the perceptions of PCSM in two domains, research and clinical practice, both of which existed at three different cultural levels: visible (structures and policy), semivisible (norms and values) and invisible (taken-for-granted attitudes).Research limitations/implicationsIt is difficult to conduct a purely objective ethnographic study because the investigation is controlled by its context. However, it is necessary to highlight and discuss the invisible level to improve understanding of negative attitudes and preconceptions related to the implementation of R&D in the clinical setting. Practical implications - By highlighting the invisible level of culture, the management of an organisation has the opportunity to initiate discussion of issues related to concealed norms and values as well as attitudes towards new thinking and change in the primary health context.Originality/valueThis paper is one of the very few studies to investigate the influence of organisational culture on the intentions of PCSM to engage in R&D.

  • Mentally pinioned: : Men's perceptions of being abused in health care.
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Men's Health. - Harriman, TN, USA : Men's Studies Press. - 1532-6306. ; 8:1, s. 60-71
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this article is to deepen the understanding of male patients' experiences of abuse in health care (AHC). Thirteen patients who had experienced AHC were interviewed using a Grounded Theory methodology. Three categories, "Crises of Confidence," "Ignored" and "Frustration," intersected to form the core category "Mentally Pinioned." This last category referred to patients not being able to act in accordance with their own conviction and interests. This study shows that men's experience of AHC go far beyond what earlier research had suggested, which generally limited it to disagreements and misunderstandings in health care or hospital errors. In this study, AHC was shown to have a profound impact at a deep personal level, leaving the men concerned "mentally pinioned."

  • Minimal residual disease assessment in childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia: a Swedish multi-centre study comparing real-time polymerase chain reaction and multicolour flow cytometry.
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: British Journal of Haematology. - Federation of European Neuroscience Societies and Blackwell Publishing Ltd. - 0007-1048. ; 152:6, s. 743-753
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Minimal residual disease (MRD) assessment is a powerful prognostic factor for determining the risk of relapse in childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL). In this Swedish multi-centre study of childhood ALL diagnosed between 2002 and 2006, the MRD levels were analysed in 726 follow-up samples in 228 children using real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RQ-PCR) of rearranged immunoglobulin/T-cell receptor genes and multicolour flow cytometry (FCM). Using an MRD threshold of 0·1%, which was the sensitivity level reached in all analyses, the concordance between RQ-PCR and FCM MRD values at day 29 was 84%. In B-cell precursor ALL, an MRD level of ≥0·1% at day 29 predicted a higher risk of bone marrow relapse (BMR) with both methods, although FCM was a better discriminator. However, considering the higher median MRD values achieved with RQ-PCR, a higher MRD cut-off (≥0·2%) improved the predictive capacity of RQ-PCR. In T-ALL, RQ-PCR was notably superior to FCM in predicting risk of BMR. That notwithstanding, MRD levels of ≥0·1%, detected by either method at day 29, could not predict isolated extramedullary relapse. In conclusion, the concordance between RQ-PCR and FCM was high and hence both methods are valuable clinical tools for identifying childhood ALL cases with increased risk of BMR.

  • Innovationen som tog skruv
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Läkartidningen. - Stockholm : Läkartidningen Förlag AB. - 0023-7205. ; 112:20–21, s. 985-987

  • Chemistries of Love. Impotence, erectile dysfunction and Viagra in Läkartidningen
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: NORMA. ; 3:1, s. 31-47
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article examines the discourse surrounding impotence, erectile dysfunction and Viagra in the Swedish medical journal Läkartidningen. It draws on articles published from 1990 to 2006, the eight years prior to and after Viagra’s 1998 introduction. Close reading of the articles has shown changes over this time period in how the impotent patient is defined. It has also revealed a transition in the discourse from the term impotence to erectile dysfunction. In these articles the role of the (female) partner in finding a solution to impotence and the social aspects of impotence also change dramatically once Viagra is available. Results from this study are contextualized against similar research that has examined the medical discourse around erectile dysfunction in the international arena.
