  • Reimagineering the Common in Precarious Times
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Intercultural Studies. - 0725-6868. ; 39:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper explores movements for social transformation in precarious times of austerity, dispossessed commons and narrow nationalism; movements counterpoised to an exhausted neoliberalism on the one hand, and a neoconservative xenophobic populism on the other. Applying ‘rainbow coalition’ as generic concept it points at contours of a globally extended countermovement for social transformation, traversing ‘race’, class and gender, driven by reimaginings of the commons and indicating how they could be repossessed and democratically ruled; that is ‘reimagineered’). A multisited enquiry explores how actors express their claims as activist citizens under varying conditions and constellations, and if/how discourses and practices from different locations and at different scales inform each other. It interrogates whether there may be an actual equivalence of outlook, objective and strategy of ostensibly homologous contending movements which develop under varying local, national and regional circumstances in contemporary communities riveted by schisms of class, ‘race’/ethnicity and gender, occupied by the ‘migration’ issue and challenged by popular demands for social sustainability. The paper contributes to social theory by linking questions posed by critics of ‘post-politics’ concerning contingences of pluralist democracy and revitalised politics of civil society, to precarity studies focused on globalisation and the changing conditions of citizenship, labour and livelihoods.

  • The double democratic deficit in climate policy-making by the EU Commission
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Femina Politica: Zeitschrift für feministische Politik- Wissenschaft. ; 25:2, s. 64-64
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Abels and Mushaben (2012) argue that there is a double democratic deficit in the EU regarding gender: women are underrepresented within the EU institutions and gender awareness is lacking in EU policymaking. This article contributes to that scholarship with its specific focus on the climate domain. EU is an important constructor of the international climate regime and the Union is committed to gender mainstream all its policies and processes. Furthermore there are documented gender differences in Europe regarding behavior and views on climate change. (Räty and Carlsson-Kanyama 2010, Goldsmith et al. 2013). This article investigates the relevancy of the double democratic deficit for EU´s climate policymaking. We map the representation of female and male experts at the Commission´s climate units and search for gender recognition in EU´s climate documents. There we discover silence regarding gender, confirmed through interviews with policy-makers. Using feminist institutionalism we conclude that existing gender power relations within the Commission affect the explored climate units, which reproduce masculine institutional practices.

  • Addressing social sustainability for small-scale fisheries in Sweden: Institutional barriers for implementing the small-scale fisheries guidelines.
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: The Small-Scale Fisheries Guidelines. Global Implementation.. - Springer Verlag. - 978-3-319-55074-9 ; s. 717-736
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Swedish coastal fisheries are not sustainable in terms of the status of their main fish stocks, their economic profitability, and as source of regular employment. Social sustainability commitments in fisheries governance advocated by the SSF Guidelines have been so far mostly neglected. In this chapter, we bring attention to two institutional settings at different governance levels relevant for the implementation of the SSF Guidelines in the Swedish context. First, we look at the introduction of social goals under the perspective of the EU’s Common Fisheries Policy (CFP). Second, we consider national tensions between forces advocating or opposing a further application of market-based economic instruments, often portrayed as an effective cure for all ills, in fisheries governance. Taking into account the logic on which the SSF Guidelines rest, we evaluate in both cases current processes for stakeholder participation in the formulation of fishing policies and strategies in Sweden. We conclude that the inclusion of a social dimension and stakeholder involvement at the EU level face procedural and institutional limitations that prevent the SSF sector from exploiting opportunities for change. Further challenges to the implementation of the SSF Guidelines arise when central national authorities’ interpretation of societal benefits opposes other interpretations, and consequently economic calculations take precedence over a participatory process-based, knowledge-accumulating approach to resource management. The SSF Guidelines, therefore, provide important material and intellectual resources to make the most of new chances that can lead to an increased likelihood of change in the direction of sustainable coastal fisheries in Sweden.

  • Deliberating Nordic science, reconfiguring Nordic democracy
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Design and displacement: social studies of science and technology, p. 124. Annual meeting of the Society for Social Studies of Science and European Association for the Study of Science and Technology. Copenhagen, Denmark October 17-20, 2012..
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Throughout the history of science and technology studies (STS), "the political" has been of central scholarly concern, from the macro-oriented interest explanations of early sociology to more recent attention to the role of science, glossed as “politics by other means,” in the construction of sociopolitical worlds themselves. STS scholarship has revealed public negotiations about what will count as legitimate knowledge as key sites for the contestation of the place of science and expertise in democratic societies, yet there has been less attention to the particular political histories and national trajectories that form the limits and possibilities of such debates. The Nordic countries, characterized by traditions of strong welfare states, particular styles of social democracy, and distinctive consensus-based modes of political deliberation and decision-making, offer a compelling context for scholars exploring the relationship between divergent political models and traditions and locally situated forms of scientific labor, discourse and governance. To this end, this panel will draw on ethnographic and historical research from a variety of scientific domains throughout Northern Europe in order to ask: To what extent are these Nordic political trajectories implicated in (and reformulated through) scientific knowledge production and science-based debates and deliberations across the region? How might a closer analysis of Nordic democratic engagement help us to understand the organization and regulation of scientific practices? Do Nordic examples of intersections or entanglements between science and politics, broadly defined, offer insights that might inform STS approaches to "the political" in other contexts?

  • How expensive is Big Science? Consequences of using simple publication counts in performance assessment of large scientific facilities
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Scientometrics. - 0138-9130. ; 100:2, s. 483-496.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Although the nuclear era and the Cold War superpower competition have long since passed, governments are still investing in Big Science, although these large facilities are nowadays mostly geared towards areas of use closer to utility. Investments in Big Science are also motivated not only by promises of scientific breakthroughs but also by expectations (and demands) of measurable impact, and with an emerging global market of competing user-oriented Big Science facilities, quantitative measures of productivity and quality have become mainstream. Among these are rather simple and one-sided publication counts. This article uses publication counts and figures of expenditure for three cases that are disparate but all represent the state-of-the-art of Big Science of their times, discussing at depth the problems of using simple publication counts as a measure of performance in science. Showing, quite trivially, that Big Science is very expensive, the article also shows the absurd consequences of consistently using simple publication counts to display productivity and quality of Big Science, and concludes that such measures should be deemed irrelevant for analyses on the level of organizations in science and replaced by qualitative assessment of the content of the science produced.

  • Ett könsperspektiv på resor i arbetet
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Arbetsmarknad och arbetsliv.. - 1400-9692. ; 14:2, s. 29-50
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract

  • Occupation, gender and work-life exits: a Swedish population study
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Ageing & Society. - 0144-686X .- 1469-1779.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The present study was undertaken in order to examine the differences between occupations in the Swedish labour market with respect to the risk for men and women of leaving working life prematurely. The project was carried out as a population study employing methodology used in demographics to predict life length at birth. Here, calculations of expected remaining work-life length were based on the exits from working life. The study was based on the Swedish national labour statistics, covering all employees who had an occupational definition in 2006 and who were in the age range 35–64 years during the study period 2007–2010. There was a clear socio-economic divide in exit patterns, comparing blue- and white-collar jobs. The differences between the highest and the lowest risk jobs exceeded 4.5 years among both men and women. In the blue-collar occupational groups there were 50 per cent or less ‘survivors’ still working at age 65; in many white-collar occupations there were more than 60 per cent. Men and women exited working life at the same age. Compared to a similar study carried out in 2006, the same socio-economic pattern prevails, but people now work longer in almost all occupations. Women exited working life 0.8 years earlier than men in 2006; this difference is now gone.

  • WHORES, MEN, AND OTHER MISFITS: UNDOING ‘FEMINIZATION’ IN THE ARMED FORCES IN THE DRC
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: African Affairs. - 1468-2621. ; African Affairs Advance Access published August 5:2011, s. 1-23
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The global attention focused on sexual violence in the DRC has not only contributed to an image of the Congolese army as a vestige of pre-modern barbarism, populated by rapists, and bearing no resemblance to the world of modern armies; it has also shaped gender and defence reform initiatives. These initiatives have become synonymous with combating sexual violence, reflecting an assumption that the gendered dynamics of the army are already known. Crucial questions such as the ‘feminization’ of the armed forces are consequently neglected. Based on in-depth interviews with soldiers in the Congolese armed forces, this article analyses the discursive strategies male soldiers employ in relation to the feminization of the army. In the light of the need to reform the military and military masculinities, the article discusses how globalized discourses and practices render the Congolese military a highly globalized sphere. It also highlights the particular and local ways in which military identities are produced through gender, and concludes that a simple inclusion of women in the armed forces in order to render men less violent might not have the pacifying effect intended.

  • Why Do Soldiers Rape? Masculinity, Violence, and Sexuality in the Armed Forces in the Congo (DRC)
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: International Studies Quarterly. - 1468-2478. ; 53:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article explores the ways soldiers in the Congo speak about themassive amount of rape committed by the armed forces in the recentwar in the DRC. It focuses on the reasons that the soldiers give to whyrape occurs. It discusses how the soldiers distinguish between ‘‘lustrapes’’ and ‘‘evil rapes’’ and argues that their explanations of rape mustbe understood in relation to notions of different (impossible) masculinities.Ultimately, through reading the soldiers’ words, we can glimpsethe logics—arguably informed by the increasingly globalized context ofsoldiering—through which rape becomes possible, and even ‘‘normalized’’in particular warscapes.
