    • This paper describes a measurement of the W boson transverse momentum distribution using ATLAS pp collision data from the 2010 run of the LHC at root s = 7 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 31 pb(-1). Events form both W -> e nu and W -> mu nu are used, and the transverse momentum of the W candidates is measured through the energy deposition in the calorimeter from the recoil of the W. The resulting distributions are unfolded to obtain the normalized differential cross sections as a function of the W boson transverse momentum. We present results for p(T)(W) < 300 GeV in the electron and muon channels as well as for their combination, and compare the combined results to the predictions of perturbative QCD and a selection of event generators.

  • One hundred new species of lichenized fungi: a signature of undiscovered global diversity

    • The number of undescribed species of lichenized fungi has been estimated at roughly 10,000. Describing and cataloging these would take the existing number of taxonomists several decades; however, the support for taxonomy is in decline worldwide. In this paper we emphasize the dire need for taxonomic expertise in lichenology. We bring together 103 colleagues from institutions worldwide to describe a total of 100 new species of lichenized fungi, representing a wide taxonomic and geographic range.   • Destabilization of fcc stable materials during SPD under high pressure

    • It was shown that of a fine α-phase was formed in the Hadfield steel after a cold plastic deformation to E = 50%. Nuclei of the ex-phase of deformed samples reduced the decomposition start temperature of the austenite by 180°C. Fine crystals of an α-phase nearly 30 nm in size, whose concentration was as high as ∼2.3%, were detected in a steel Fe 79.55Mn17Al3Co0.45 after a SPD to ε = 92%. A steel Fe61.2Cr18Mn20N 0.7C0.1 contained fine crystals of a strain-induced α-phase 20 nm in size after a low temperature plastic deformation. The α-phase, which was formed under the given conditions, had an extremely low Curie temperature TC = 400°C. When the steel was strongly deformed (e ≈ 8) by SPD a strain-induced α-phase have a normal Curie temperature TC = 600°C. Thus, the obtained results indicate that SPD can result in a considerable destabilization of stable austenitic steels.

    • It is investigated UFG structure formation in CP Ti bulks processed by SPD (cold Twist Extrusion (TE), true strain e∼5.1, with the following Cold Rolling (CR), true strain e∼0.7). Evolution of microstructure and tensile mechanical properties in the CP Ti were investigated under room temperature. After the TE, in transversal section it is formed structure fragments with size less 1 μm. Strength increased on 80 %; elongation was 3.4 %. Following low-temperature annealing (300°C, 1 hour) leaded to increasing in both strength and ductility properties. In longitudinal section, specimens' strength properties increased slightly. Elongation was about 6 %. The following low-temperature annealing practically did not influence on the strength but improved elongation to 7.2 %. The additional CR leaded to forming severe deformed structure. Average size of fragments was 50-500 nm. It was observed elimination of anisotropy and equalization of strength. In both directions ultimate tensile strength became about 780-800 MPa and ductility properties remained the same as in the original.

  • A measurement of the calorimeter response to single hadrons and determination of the jet energy scale uncertainty using LHC Run-1 pp-collision data with the ATLAS detector

    • A measurement of the calorimeter response to isolated charged hadrons in the ATLAS detector at the LHC is presented. This measurement is performed with 3.2 nb(-1) of proton-proton collision data at root s = 7 TeV from 2010 and 0.1 nb(-1) of data at root s = 8 TeV from 2012. A number of aspects of the calorimeter response to isolated hadrons are explored. After accounting for energy deposited by neutral particles, there is a 5% discrepancy in the modelling, using various sets of GEANT4 hadronic physics models, of the calorimeter response to isolated charged hadrons in the central calorimeter region. The description of the response to anti-protons at low momenta is found to be improved with respect to previous analyses. The electromagnetic and hadronic calorimeters are also examined separately, and the detector simulation is found to describe the response in the hadronic calorimeter well. The jet energy scale uncertainty and correlations in scale between jets of different momenta and pseudorapidity are derived based on these studies. The uncertainty is 2-5% for jets with transverse momenta above 2 TeV, where this method provides the jet energy scale uncertainty for ATLAS.

    • The luminosity determination for the ATLAS detector at the LHC during pp collisions at root s = 8 TeV in 2012 is presented. The evaluation of the luminosity scale is performed using several luminometers, and comparisons between these luminosity detectors are made to assess the accuracy, consistency and long-term stability of the results. A luminosity uncertainty of delta L/L = +/- 1.9% is obtained for the 22.7 fb(-1) of pp collision data delivered to ATLAS at root s = 8 TeV in 2012.

    • Searches for exclusively produced W boson pairs in the process pp(gamma gamma) -&gt; pW(+) W- p and an exclusively produced Higgs boson in the process pp(gg) -&gt; pHp have been performed using e(+/-) mu(-/+) final states. These measurements use 20.2 fb(-1) of pp collisions collected by the ATLAS experiment at a center-of-mass energy root s = 8 TeV at the LHC. Exclusive production of W+ W- consistent with the Standard Model prediction is found with 3.0 sigma significance. The exclusive W+ W- production cross section is determined to be sigma(gamma gamma -&gt; W+ W- -&gt; e(+/-) mu(-/+) X) = 6.9 +/- 2.2(stat) +/- 1.4(sys) fb, in agreement with the Standard Model prediction. Limits on anomalous quartic gauge couplings are set at 95% confidence level as -1.7 x 10(-6) &lt; a(0)(W) / Lambda(2) &lt; 1.7 x 10(-6) GeV-2 and -6.4 x 10(-6) &lt; a(C)(W) / Lambda(2) &lt; 6.3 x 10(-6) GeV-2. A 95% confidence-level upper limit on the total production cross section for an exclusive Higgs boson is set to 1.2 pb.

  • Measurement of the photon identification efficiencies with the ATLAS detector using LHC Run-1 data

    • The algorithms used by the ATLAS Collaboration to reconstruct and identify prompt photons are described. Measurements of the photon identification efficiencies are reported, using 4.9 fb(-1) of pp collision data collected at the LHC at root s = 7 TeV and 20.3 fb-1 at root s = 8 TeV. The efficiencies are measured separately for converted and unconverted photons, in four different pseudorapidity regions, for transverse momenta between 10 GeV and 1.5 TeV. The results from the combination of three data-driven techniques are compared to the predictions from a simulation of the detector response, after correcting the electromagnetic shower momenta in the simulation for the average differences observed with respect to data. Data-to-simulation efficiency ratios used as correction factors in physics measurements are determined to account for the small residual efficiency differences. These factors are measured with uncertainties between 0.5% and 10% in 7 TeV data and between 0.5% and 5.6% in 8 TeV data, depending on the photon transverse momentum and pseudorapidity.

  • Measurement of the t(t)over-bar production cross-section using e mu events with b-tagged jets in pp collisions at root s=13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    • This paper describes a measurement of the inclusive top quark pair production cross-section (sigma(t (t) over bar)) with a data sample of 3.2 fb(-1) of proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of root s = 13 TeV, collected in 2015 by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. This measurement uses events with an opposite-charge electron-muon pair in the final state. Jets containing b-quarks are tagged using an algorithm based on track impact parameters and reconstructed secondary vertices. The numbers of events with exactly one and exactly two b-tagged jets are counted and used to determine simultaneously sigma(t (t) over bar) and the efficiency to reconstruct and b-tag a jet from a top quark decay, thereby minimising the associated systematic uncertainties. The cross-section is measured to be: s(t (t) over bar)= 818 +/- 8 (stat) +/- 27 (syst) +/- 19 (lumi) +/- 12 (beam) pb, where the four uncertainties arise from data statistics, experimental and theoretical systematic effects, the integrated luminosity and the LHC beam energy, giving a total relative uncertainty of 4.4%. The result is consistent with theoretical QCD calculations at next-to-next-to-leading order. A fiducial measurement corresponding to the experimental acceptance of the leptons is also presented.

  • Measurement of the top quark mass in the t(t)over-bar -&gt; dilepton channel from root s=8TeVATLAS data

    • The top quark mass is measured in the t (t) over bar -&gt; dilepton channel (lepton= e, mu) using ATLAS data recorded in the year 2012 at the LHC. The data were taken at a proton-proton centre-of-mass energy of root s = 8 TeV and correspond to an integrated luminosity of about 20.2 fb(-1). Exploiting the template method, and using the distribution of invariant masses of lepton-b-jetpairs, the top quark mass is measured to be m(top) = 172.99 +/- 0.41(stat)+/- 0.74(syst) GeV, with a total uncertainty of 0.84 GeV. Finally, acombination with previous ATLAS m(top) measurements from root s = 7 TeV data in the t (t) over bar -&gt; dilepton and t (t) over bar -&gt; lepton + jets channels results in m(top) = 172.84 +/- 0.34(stat)+/- 0.61(syst) GeV, with a total uncertainty of 0.70 GeV.
