Affinity binding of inclusion bodies on supermacroporous monolithic cryogels using labeling with specific antibodies

 A new chromatographic method based on affinity supermacroporous monolithic cryogels is developed for binding and analyzing inclusion bodies during fermentation. The work demonstrated that it is possible to bind specific IgG and IgY antibodies to the 15 and 17 amino acids at the terminus ends of a 33 kDa target protein aggregated as inclusion bodies. The antibody treated inclusion bodies from lysed fermentation broth can be specifically retained in protein A and pseudobiospecific ligand sulfamethazine modified supermacroporous cryogels. The degree of binding of IgG and IgY treated inclusion bodies to the Protein A and sulfamethazine gels are investigated, as well as the influence of pH on the sulfamethazine ligand. Optimum binding of 78 and 72% was observed on both protein A and sulfamethazine modified cryogel columns, respectively, using IgG labeling of the inclusion bodies. The antibody treated inclusion bodies pass through unretained in the sulfamethazine supermacroporous gel at pH that does not favour the binding between the ligand on the gel and the antibodies on the surface of inclusion bodies. Also the unlabeled inclusion bodies went through the gel unretained, showing no nonspecific binding or trapping within the gel. These findings may very well be the foundation for the building of a powerful analytical tool during fermentation of inclusion bodies as well as a convenient way to purify them from fermentation broth. These results also support our earlier findings [Kumar, A., Plieva, F.M., Galaev, I.Yu., Mattiasson, B.. 2003. Affinity fractionation of lymphocytes using a monolithic cyogel. J. Immunol. Methods 283, 185194] with mammalian cells that were surface labeled with specific antibodies and recognized on protein A supermacroporous gels. A general binding and separation system can be established on antibody binding cryogel affinity matrices.

Ternary qVirasoroWitt HomNambuLie algebras

 In this paper we construct ternary qVirasoroWitt algebras which qdeform the ternary VirasoroWitt algebras constructed by Curtright, Fairlie and Zachos using su(1, 1) enveloping algebra techniques. The ternary VirasoroWitt algebras constructed by Curtright, Fairlie and Zachos depend on a parameter and are not NambuLie algebras for all but finitely many values of this parameter. For the parameter values for which the ternary VirasoroWitt algebras are NambuLie, the corresponding ternary qVirasoroWitt algebras constructed in this paper are also HomNambuLie because they are obtained from the ternary NambuLie algebras using the composition method. For other parameter values this composition method does not yield a HomNambuLie algebra structure for qVirasoroWitt algebras. We show however, using a different construction, that the ternary VirasoroWitt algebras of Curtright, Fairlie and Zachos, as well as the general ternary qVirasoroWitt algebras we construct, carry a structure of the ternary HomNambuLie algebra for all values of the involved parameters.

 This book project was initiated at The Tribute Workshop in Honour of Gunnar Sparr and the followup workshop Inequalities, Interpolation, Noncommutative Analysis, Noncommutative Geometry and Applications, held at the Centre for Mathematical Sciences, Lund University in May and November of 2008. The resulting book is dedicated in celebration of Gunnar Sparr's sixtyfifth anniversary and more than forty years of exceptional service to mathematics and its applications in engineering and technology, mathematics and engineering education, as well as interdisciplinary, industrial and international cooperation. This book presents new advances in several areas of mathematics and engineering mathematics including applications in modern technology, engineering and life sciences. Thirteen highquality chapters put forward many new methods and results, reviews of up to date research and open directions and problems for future research. A special chapter by Gunnar Sparr and Georg Lindgren contains a historical account and important aspects of engineering mathematics research and education, and the implementation of the highly successful education programme in Engineering Mathematics at Lund Institute of Technology, where not only the mathematical sciences have played a role. This book will serve as a source of inspiration for a broad spectrum of researchers and research students.

On the complexity of using performance measures : Enhancing sustained production improvement capability by combining OEE and productivity

 The global speed of change within the manufacturing industry forces companies to constantly improve production performance. In that effort, performance measures are critical for driving and managing production improvements. Two of the most commonly used measures in operations are productivity and overall equipment efficiency (OEE). However, the potential of using these measures as improvement drivers is not fully utilized in industry today due, for example, to ambiguities in definitions and their interpretation. A study of available theory indicates a gap between these implications from a theoretical perspective vs. the industrial perspective. Bridging this theorypractice gap implies great potential for competitiveness and growth in manufacturing, since the latent production capacity that could be utilized is tremendous. Even if a high degree of complexity in definition and calculation when applied in operational conditions might be perceived, this paper will show that a systematically used combined set of OEE and productivity measures can successfully drive production improvements. Also, two new productivity measures for driving improvements at the shop floor level are proposed. The empirical findings are based on a twoyear case study within a manufacturing company in the automotive industry using an interactive research approach.

The mathematics of internet search engines

 This article presents a survey of techniques for ranking results in search engines, with emphasis on linkbased ranking methods and the PageRank algorithm. The problem of selecting, in relation to a user search query, the most relevant documents from an unstructured source such as the WWW is discussed in detail. The need for extending classical information retrieval techniques such as boolean searching and vector space models with linkbased ranking methods is demonstrated. The PageRank algorithm is introduced, and its numerical and spectral properties are discussed. The article concludes with an alternative means of computing PageRank, along with some example applications of this new method.

A Study of Phase Noise in Colpitts and LCtank CMOS Oscillators

 This paper presents a study of phase noise in CMOS Colpitts and LCtank oscillators. Closedform symbolic formulas for the 1/f2 phasenoiseregion are derived for both the Colpitts oscillator (either singleended or differential) and the LCtank oscillator, yielding highly accurate results under very general assumptions. A comparison between the differential Colpitts and the LCtank oscillator is also carried out, which shows that the latter is capable of a 2dB lower phasenoise flgureofmerit (FoM) when simplified oscillator designs and ideal MOS models are adopted. Several prototypesof both Colpitts and LCtank oscillators have been implemented in a 0.35μm CMOS process. The best performance of the LCtank oscillatorsshows a phase noise of  142 dBc/Hz at 3MHz offset frequency from a 2.9GHz carrier with a 16mW power consumption, resulting in an excellent FoM of ∼189 dBc/Hz. For the same oscillation frequency, the FoM displayed by the differential Colpitts oscillators is ∼5 dB lower.

More on the 1/f 2 phase noise performance of CMOS differentialpair LCtank oscillators

 This paper presents a rigorous phase noise analysis in the 1/f 2 region for the differential CMOS LCtank oscillator with both nMOS and pMOS switch pairs. A compact, closedform phase noise equation is obtained, accounting for the noise contributions from both tank losses and transistors currents, which allows a robust comparison between LC oscillators built with either one or two switch pairs. The fabricated oscillator prototype is tunable between 2.15 and 2.35 GHz, and shows a phase noise of  144 dBc/Hz at 3 MHz offset from the 2.3 GHz carrier for a 4 mA bias current. The phase noise figureofmerit is practically constant across the tuning range, with a minimum of 191.5 dBc/Hz. A reference singleswitchpair oscillator has been implemented and tested as well, and the difference between the phase noise levels displayed by the two oscillators is very nearly the one expected from theory.

Construction of nLie algebras and nary HomNambuLie algebras

 As nary operations, generalizing Lie and Poisson algebras, arise in many different physical contexts, it is interesting to study general ways of constructing explicit realizations of such multilinear structures. Generically, they describe the dynamics of a physical system, and there is a need of understanding their quantization. HomNambuLie algebras provide a framework that might be an appropriate setting in which nLie algebras (nary NambuLie algebras) can be deformed, and their quantization studied. We present a procedure to construct (n + 1)ary HomNambuLie algebras from nary HomNambuLie algebras equipped with a generalized trace function. It turns out that the implications of the compatibility conditions, that are necessary for this construction, can be understood in terms of the kernel of the trace function and the range of the twisting maps. Furthermore, we investigate the possibility of defining (n + k)Lie algebras from nLie algebras and a kform satisfying certain conditions. (C) 2011 American Institute of Physics.  The need to consider nary algebraic structures, generalizing Lie and Poisson algebras, has become increasingly important in physics, and it should therefore be of interest to study the mathematical concepts related to nary algebras. The purpose of this paper is to investigate ternary multiplications (as deformations of nLie structures) constructed from the binary multiplication of a HomLie algebra, a linear twisting map, and a trace function satisfying certain compatibility conditions. We show that the relation between the kernels of the twisting maps and the trace function plays an important role in this context and provide examples of HomNambuLie algebras obtained using this construction. Generalization of nary Nambu algebras and beyond

 The aim of this paper is to introduce nary Homalgebra structures generalizing the nary algebras of Lie type including nary Nambu algebras, nary NambuLie algebras and nary Lie algebras, and nary algebras of associative type including nary totally associative and nary partially associative algebras. We provide examples of the new structures and present some properties and construction theorems. We describe the general method allowing one to obtain an nary Homalgebra structure starting from an nary algebra and an nary algebra endomorphism. Several examples are derived using this process. Also we initiate investigation of classification problems for algebraic structures introduced in the article and describe all ternary threedimensional HomNambuLie structures with diagonal homomorphism.
